Who thought that a kid’s nursery rhyme would serve as the inspiration for a slot game. Well, Microgaming did, and this latest edition is a 5-reel version of their previous 3-reel offering, but with a few upgrades, of course.

Upon initial inspection of the game, you can tell this is a super simple slot. The 5x3 reel setup with 15 paylines is pretty much as simple as it gets. The reels are filled with all sorts of cartoonish farm-related symbols like barns, sacks of what appears to be wool, sheep and a variety of fruits and vegetables. In the background is a green meadow with sheep grazing and a windmill. There is soothing music playing and some interesting sound effects while spinning the reels. Bar Bar Black Sheep is a low volatility slot that offers a max payout of up to 95,000 and an RTP of 95.32%.

Just like the title of the game, if a Bar, Bar and a Black Sheep symbol land on the reels in that order and adjacent to each other, it activates the Bonus, which awards a random multiplier for that round.

The multiplier can be up to an impressive 999x, plus the feature can occur in the base game and during the Free Spins. When the right combination comes up, the symbols that triggered the feature, transform into individual reels with numbers from 1-9 on each. The independent 3 reels then spin and the number that forms is the multiplier that will be applied to the bet amount. It’s worth noting that there is a Wild symbol with the text “Bar Bar Black Sheep” on it, however, this doesn’t trigger the Bonus, and you must get the symbol with the black sheep image on it.

Free Spins

As would be expected with almost all new slots, this one too has a Free Spins feature. Triggering the Free Spins is as simple as landing 3, 4 or 5 scatter symbols, which awards 10, 15 or 20 spins respectively.

To make things even more rewarding, all wins during the Free Spins are multiplied 3x, except for any wins generated from the Bar Bar Black Sheep Bonus.

We took this new Microgaming creation for some spins to check out what it had to offer. To our surprise on the very first spin, the Bar Bar Black Sheep Bonus triggered, and the individual reel positions started spinning and awarded an impressive 161x multiplier. It was then back to the regular game and spin after spin, things were looking rather disappointing with no wins at all. Eventually, after some time, 3 Free Spins symbols landed and kick-started the 10 free games. The Free Spins played out and occasionally gifted us with some small payouts with the default 3x multiplier for the feature. Overall, the Free Spins ended with a reasonable payout, equivalent to 18x our bet amount.

Review Summary

Bar Bar Black Sheep is okay, not wow, and certainly not terrible. This slot obviously doesn’t offer the impressive storylines, graphics and features that you find in most modern video slots. However, when you consider this is a really simple 5-reel slot, it does offer some enjoyable gameplay and features.

The Bar Bar Black Sheep Bonus feature is really effective and is a nice twist that can produce some great payouts. Despite the reported “low volatility”, our playing experience would put this game at a medium to high volatility.
